“The worst thing in the world is to try to sleep and not to.”
- F. Scott Fitzgerald
I can’t get no… satisfaction
Very often, people tell themselves and others “ I can’t get no sleep. ” F. Scott Fitzgerald says it all. Having trouble sleeping is the worst thing in the world. For some reason this does remind me of a song by Rolling Stones “… and I tried, and I tried…” and still I can’t get no sleep. That aside, one should know that a lot of people suffer from that problem. Lack of sleep or the inability to stay asleep is known as insomnia. It is the most common sleeping disorder.
One-third of the world’s population suffers from insomnia. Almost everyone occasionally suffers from it.
Don’t worry, be happy
The big question probably circling one’s mind to try to understand the reason behind saying “ I can’t get no sleep ” is why. There are many reasons for sleeplessness. One of the most common factors would be stress. Who doesn’t feel stressed once in a while? Or depressed? Both are usually the reasons why people suffer sleepless nights and say “I can’t get no sleep.”
Worrying about work, bills, health and other things causes sleeplessness. People lie on their beds worrying about the things that can happen the next day, week, month or year unable to fall asleep from thinking. It’s easy to say “don’t worry, be happy” but isn’t it worse constantly saying “ I can’t get no sleep? ”

Free your mind
There are a lot of techniques to enable one to fall asleep. One of these would be reading while lying in a relaxed position. Not into reading much? Then listen to music. Music can soothe the savage beast. It does have a relaxing factor, and can help one get in a deep slumber. People who are more into “new age” methods can consider exercise, yoga or meditation. Some other simple but effective solutions can be having a soothing bath or shower before bed or a massage. Some herbs are helpful in battling with sleeplessness like chamomile, lavender, valerian root, passion flower, hope, lemon balm and California poppy. People can drink them like tea before going to bed.
If one still says “ I can’t get no sleep ” after the above recommendations, there are other ways to cure your insomnia. Some sleeping tablets can be purchased over the counter. Services for hypnosis to treat insomnia aren’t so uncommon either.
“Sleeping tablets are useful in treating the symptoms of insomnia in the shorter term, but they are unlikely to cure chronic insomnia.”
- Professor Kevin Morgan, director of the Clinical Sleep Research Unit at Loughborough University
There are also other cognitive behavioral therapies offered by doctors for severe cases. That is if natural remedies and sleeping tablets can’t cure it and one can still say “ I can’t get no sleep. ”

Insomnia
Insomnia in itself can be a symptom of an underlying medical disorder (secondary insomnia) or a syndrome in itself (primary insomnia). Someone saying “ I can’t get no sleep ” is suffering from insomnia. If it becomes really bad and self-treatment doesn’t work then it’s high time one consults a medical doctor.
Numerous medical conditions can cause sleeplessness. From heart, brain, lung, muscle and joint problems to a serious and rare genetic brain disease called fatal familial insomnia which currently has no cure.
Sleeping to dream
Finding out the reason behind your sleeplessness is the key. Put a stop to saying “ I can’t get no sleep ” and start sleeping to dream. Make sure to relax before going to bed, try to have happy thoughts, nothing troubling. If
it persists then it might be wise to consult your medical doctor. Lack of sleep can cause people to have headaches, poor performance in work or school, impaired mental functioning and a poor immune system function.
Sleep tight, sleep right. Wake up feeling refreshed everyday instead of feeling irritable and tired and stay healthy. Certainly a lot of people experience the inability to fall asleep but most take it for granted. In a bigger picture, sleeplessness not only has a personal impact. It also affects the economy and dozing off while driving for example endangers other people as well.
A good night’s sleep is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Finding peace of mind is important in getting a good night’s sleep. Stop saying “ I can’t get no sleep ” and start sleeping to dream. With peace of mind, tomorrow can only get better.
