There are many things people take for granted in their busy lives. One of these things is sleep. When asked if they get enough sleep, young working people would often say “it’s something I can’t afford.” Some would even go to the extent of saying “sleep is for the weak.” People would go on with their daily routine and believe there’s nothing wrong with lack of it. Lack of sleep is commonly known as insomnia. Isomnia is the difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.

Having fun instead of snoozing

It is easy enough to take it for granted. It does give people more time to do things that they enjoy doing after work or studies. Little do they know that the amount of rest one gets everyday is important. Whether it is too much or too little, it affects everything from their income to their athletic performance.

Insomnia is so common

Difficulty falling asleep or difficulty staying asleep is clinically known as isomnia. It is the most common complaint at any age. Studies show that it affects 30-50% of the general population. It affects older people more than the younger ones and women more than men. Most of the people suffering from insomnia in the younger age group are separated, divorced or widowed. Almost half of adults 60 years or older suffer from this disorder.

Why?

There could be many reasons why people suffer from isomnia. It could simply be because of the general environment of your bedroom. If it’s too hot or too noisy, one will have a difficulty getting a good night’s rest. If that isn’t it, then there must be other reasons.

Three most major causes are psychological causes, physical causes, and temporary events or factors. Stress is one of the number one causes of sleeplessness. Stress can leave a person feeling anxious or depressed. It is more apparent on older people because they are more likely to take sedatives. Sedatives may have caused them to have particular problems with addiction and side-effects. The reason why it does affect women more than men has something to do with hormonal changes in women. Hormonal changes which include premenstrual syndrome, menstruation and pregnancy to cite a few. The danger is when there could be an underlying medical condition that could be causing the insomnia. That is why no one should dismiss it as simply lack of sleep.

Getting the right amount of rest is also part of having a healthy lifestyle. Insomnia can affect someone mentally and physically. It is the reason why one would feel tired, depressed and irritable at times. Making it hard for

individuals to concentrate or perform tasks during the day. It’s not just that, there will eventually be an increased risk of some diseases like high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. One might only see the first part of its effect for now. In the long run, it does have more serious health-related repercussions.

Sleep tight, sleep right

Maintain a healthy lifestyle and don’t take it for granted. It is ironically easy to get but hard to get for some. A normal night’s rest is still approximately 8 hours a day. Everyone would function better if everyone could do just that. To fix it, one would first have to admit it’s a problem. Then try to discover the reason behind it. If it can’t simply be figured out, don’t be afraid to seek medical advice. One’s insomnia could signal a need to change one’s lifestyle as it is. It could be an underlying medical condition which could be hormonal and can be dismissed as a phase. It could also be something more serious.
